  1. The Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races

Held each year on the Saturday morning prior to our Marathon, etc. on the Oceanfront Promenade in Long Branch (the site of the finish area for the Sunday races), Barnabas Health brings families a morning of fun activities and kids races. Please check out the various activities on our website and bring the family!

The Kids’ 1.2 Mile Run is the only event which requires a paid registration (either on-line or on-site on Saturday the 25th).

  1. The Kids Move The New Jersey Marathon Program

Over 2500 Elementary School Children from Long Branch, Oceanport, Monmouth Beach and Perth Amboy have begun a multi-week program to accumulate either 12 or 25 equivalent miles of movement (depending on their age) before Saturday, April 25th.  The children who have successfully met that goal will be invited to move (run, walk, etc.) the last 1.1 or 1.2 miles with us in order to complete the half or full marathon distance, during the Kids’ 1.2 Mile Run. This program is enabled by the enthusiastic support of: the School Districts, Novo Nordisk (sponsoring the multi-week in-school portion), the New Jersey Road Runners Youth Foundation (sponsoring the finishers medals), and the New Jersey Marathon and Half Marathon.  We are all proud of this amazing event, and expect to offer it state-wide in future years.

  1. Security – Be Aware of the Rules to Make Race Day Easier

On Sunday, April 26th special security procedures will be in place at the start, finish and throughout the courses. Here are some Highlights:

  • Registered Athletes: May bring one clear plastic bag, the one which was given to them by the race, with no other bag inside it. That Official Race Day Gear Bag must be dropped off at the Gear Drop Trucks inside Monmouth Park.  Hydration belts and hydration bladders are allowed (as long as they do not contain pockets).  Athletes wearing the hydration belts/packs may be asked to take a drink of the liquid.
  • Spectators: NO BAGS OF ANY KIND will be allowed in the security zones inside the Monmouth Park Grandstand gates or inside the secure Finish Line Festival Area. That means no pocketbooks, backpacks, diaper bags, etc.

  1. Getting Information During Race Weekend

If you have questions over race weekend there will be Information available in many locations and ways. There will be an Info booth just inside the Main Expo Entrance (to the right), a tent as you enter Monmouth Park at the Start Area and a tent at the Finish Line Festival area on race day. In addition, there will be staff roaming around each of those venues wearing shirts which say: “Got A Question?” on the front and “Ask Me!” on the back.  If the Ask Me folks can’t answer your question they will direct you to one of our Info booths/tents.

  1. Volunteers – Final Call

We have a few volunteer positions still open for race weeks shifts (April 23-26).  If you’d like to be part of the action and involved in some of the many activities required to put on this weekend event, we would be glad to find a spot for you. Send an email right away to: Volunteers@NJMarathon.org, as we’re almost full.

  1. Making Race Day Special

Choose one or more of the following ways to enhance your race experience:

  • Sign up for a VIP Experience. VIPs will receive: a special meeting with our Race Director and local dignitaries, special expo and race day parking areas, special start and finish line food and relaxation areas, special bibs and bib numbers, etc.

You’re automatically entered in the raffle as soon as you cross the finish line (they are chosen by finisher’s bib numbers). Among other items, we will be raffling off six pairs of Skechers Performance shoes. That’s the brand and line of shoes which America’s top marathoner, Meb Keflezighi, wears!
  • Enjoy a free, light massage, to help with your post-race recovery and rejuvenation
  • Enjoy a snack or meal while cheering for family and friends still on the race course
  • Have your new spinning finisher’s medal engraved with your name and finish time

When planning you visit to our Health & Fitness Expo and Race Packet Pick-up service please check out our free Presentation Series and Exercise classes listed in Race Director Update #8.

Weather permitting, we will again have musical entertainment in the area in front of the Expo main entrance.

  1. Let’s All Pitch in Together to Help Others

We’re attempting to change the lives of families in African villages again by donating used athletic shoes to the MORE Foundation during the Expo. It takes the proceeds from 600 pairs of shoes to sustain a family for a year, and we’d like to adopt several families again this year! Together we have supported 8 families since 2012. That’s a lot of shoes! We thank you for giving us your old training and racing partners! We encourage you to continue the tradition this year.

Move for Hunger will be conducting a food drive again this year during the Health & Fitness Expo.  Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo.  Please help us to end hunger here in New Jersey!! Together you have donated over 6,000 pounds of food.  Thank you for your generosity!

I hope that the information above will help you to understand what to expect during the many parts of race weekend and help you to better plan your time with us at the Shore.

Best wishes during your training and on race day!

Race Director Update #8
3 weeks until Race Weekend

Thank you for registering for the 19th Annual Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon weekend, which includes the 2015 RRCA New Jersey State Championship race in the marathon distance. In an effort to help make your participation more enjoyable throughout the entire race weekend, this is the eighth in a series of weekly messages containing important information. Copies of these messages will also be available on our Website and on our Blog. Links to them will be posted on both Facebook and Twitter.

New for 2015:

  • There are NO Speed Restrictions for athletes in wheelchairs in the full marathon
  • Special Race Day Buses from: NY Port Authority, Newark Penn Station, Rahway, Matawan, Middletown

  1. Important Security Information

We have posted important Security Information on our website, under the “Event Info” menu item.  Please read the appropriate information carefully in order to keep extra stress out of race day.

Summary for Athletes: You will be allowed to carry one clear plastic “Race Day Gear Bag”, which we will issue you at race packet pick-up, in both the Start Area and Finish Area, AND only as long as you are wearing your bib and it is clearly visible (in order to identify you as a registered athlete).

Summary for Your Supporters: NO BAGS OF ANY KIND are allowed in both the Start Area and the Finish Area.  In order for your supporters to fully enjoy the race day experience with you, please communicate the NO BAG Policy to each of them.  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.

  1. Bib and Corral Assignments

Everyone who has registered has now been assigned a bib number and a start corral.  We will be providing a link shortly to look up your specific information.  Please print out your information from the provided link and bring it with you to pick up your race packet (bib, timing strips, event tech-shirt, official race day gear bag, etc.)

If you forget the print out with your bib number, terminals will be available to look it up. It will slow down you process however, so we recommend you bring this printout with you.

  1. Important Medical Information

For your safety during your race, please take the time to fill out the medical and emergency contact information section on the back of your bib.  While most of us feel that we’ll never need it, and we hope that you don’t, our medical staff has lost important time when treating athletes because they did not know about medical conditions and current medication(s).  If that information is not needed it will never be seen by anyone, but that information could become very important should it be necessary.  Please fill it out using an ink which will not run when wet.

  1. Rejuvenate After Your Race

After you’ve completed your race be sure to stop by our Rejuvenation/Recovery Tent in the Finish Line Festival area for a free massage (watch for signs).  A short message on tired and sore muscles, by trained experts, can do wonders on race day and the following days.  You’ve earned it. Enjoy!

  1. 2015 Health & Fitness Expo Presentation Series

Our 2015 Presentation line-up is bigger and better than ever before! These free presentations and demonstrations from experts in many fields will help you to excel, remain injury free, make the most of race day, recover better afterward and inspire you.  Be sure to check the presentation schedule below while planning your time at the Expo and Packet Pick-up so that you can take advantage of this wealth of information. 2015 Race Director Update #3

_New_Jersey_Marathon_Primary_Logo_2014_2

19th Annual Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon, April 24-26

Full Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay, 5K, Health & Fitness Expo, Family Events & Kids Races

Race Director Update #3
8 weeks until Race Weekend

Thank you for registering for the 19th Annual Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon weekend, which includes the 2015 RRCA New Jersey State Championship race in the marathon distance. In an effort to help make your participation more enjoyable throughout the entire race weekend, this is the third in a series of weekly messages containing important information. Copies of these messages will also be available on our Website. Links to them will be posted on both Facebook and Twitter.

New for 2015:

• The Full, Half and Relay races will all start at 7:30 am this year.
• There are NO speed restrictions for athletes in wheelchairs in either the half or full marathons this year.
• The next on-course training run/walk will be held on March 8th, starting and finishing inside the Ocean Place Resort & Spa. Start time is 8 am. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, etc. will be available both before and after your training. Please note: The resort is offering a special Saturday night room rate for those running with us on Sunday morning. Book by calling the resort directly. Brunch will be available at the resort after your training for $24.

Things to know about race weekend:

Expo: Parking on both days of the New Jersey Marathon Health and Fitness Expo is free and open to the public (Fri 1pm-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm). This parking will be inside the gates of Monmouth Park, in the “Grandstand” lots adjacent to the Start Line. Please note: these lots will not be used for parking on race day. There will also be special parking for all VIPs who will receive instructions directly from the VIP Coordinator as we get closer to race weekend.

For returning athletes, spectators and staff: while there are a few changes this year you’ll be familiar with the general layout of this floor plan as it’s similar to the 2014 floor plan.

For first time attendees: the floor plan layout basically divides the Grandstand building into half lengthwise. The main Expo Vendor area will primarily be on the left, just inside the main entrance. The normal athlete traffic flow will be either straight ahead through the Novo Nordisk lounge area or a slight right to pass beside the Info Desk, Souvenir Shop and into the Race Packet Pick-up area.

New this year will be a place to have a bit to eat. Hot dogs/sausage, etc. will be available at a Pub and Hotdog/Deli Stand, which will be located near the beginning of the Packet Pick-up area. Stop by for food, beer, water, etc.

If you don’t have your bib number with you for some reason, just head into the Bib Number Lookup Area, step up to a tablet/laptop, search for your name, write down your bib number and take it with you to the proper bib pick-up line.

The bib tables will be arranged in groups by each specific race. The group of tables for your particular race will be sub-divided into ranges of bib numbers at each individual table. Which means that you should first look for the line of table(s) for your race and then find the specific table within that grouping which has your bib number in its range of numbers.

Once you’ve picked up your bib, t-shirt, race day gear bag, and purchased or picked up any parking, train, or VIP Program tickets, you will also have the opportunity to check out the official race merchandise area before exiting into the Expo Area.

Food Drive:  Move For Hunger will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items again this year. There is an urgent need for food here in New Jersey, and around the country. Did you know that over 50 million Americans struggle to find their next meal? Sadly, kids are affected in large numbers. Please bring a non-perishable food item to the expo and donate it to the Move For Hunger Team. Each year you’ve donated several thousand pounds of food. Please keep the caring alive in 2015!

Used Athletic Shoe Drive: The MORE Foundation Group will be accepting donations of used athletic shoes once again this year, during our expo.  Over the past several years, together with your generous donations, we have adopted eight African families and changed their lives forever.  I will personally be donating at least 12 pairs of old running buddies. Please join me in supporting this charity’s efforts.

Solutions, Registration, VIPs and Tickets Desks:

Solutions – If something is not as expected with your race registration, bib/timing tag, t-shirt, parking ticket, etc. stop by our Solutions Desk to request a solution to the problem.

Registration – If we haven’t sold all of the: 5K, Half Relay, Half Marathon or Full Marathon registrations at the opening of the expo you may be able to register for this year’s races at a bank of laptops in the packet pick-up area (until we reach our cutoff number for each of those individual races).

Please note: We have sold out our full marathon registrations and almost sold out our half marathon registrations prior to the opening of the expo in each of the last two years. Please don’t wait until the last minute as you may not be able to register for any of our Sunday races at the expo.

Unlike our other races, last minute registrations for our 5K may be available on race day morning, Saturday, April 25.

During the expo hours you will also have the opportunity to take advantage of significantly discounted registration pricing for our 20th Anniversary races, which will be held on April 25th, 2016. Registration prices for our 2016 races will increase after the close of the expo, but will still be discounted, as they were in 2014.

Tide Team members, or those who would like to become team members: these special expo registration discounts are a way we can help you in your continued support of our event each year. Please take advantage of these once-a-year prices.

Elites and VIPs – Pick up your entire race packet (bib # & timing tag, race shirt, gear bag, etc.) at the VIP desk. It’s a one stop service for each of you.

Tickets – Tickets/passes may still be available for sale and pick-up at our Tickets Desk if they haven’t sold out. Pre-purchasing tickets is still the best way to ensure your place in our VIP program, Race Day Train and Start and Finish Area Parking. Please note: Guaranteed Finish Area Parking normally sells out before the opening of the expo, so if you’re interested please don’t wait for the expo to purchase that parking option. Once the space is gone we have no way to add more spaces at 7-Presidents Park.

Expo Speaker Series: We will again be hosting a series of presentations throughout both days of the Expo. Watch for the details on our website (speakers, topics and times) and an announcement on our social media pages (Facebook and Twitter).

 1. Race Information Booklet

We are pleased to provide a link to our “green” Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon Information Booklet.  We hope that it will be a useful recap of information about our entire weekend of activities for you and your supporters.

2. Maps

Here’s a link to maps for each of our races plus the Start & Finish Line Festival Areas all in one place.

3. The Marathon is SOLD OUT

Don’t delay in registering for our half and relay as they may sell out at any moment!    Please note: As people switch races, defer or drop out we’ll fill each newly open slot from the wait list, but there’s no guarantee. So, if you missed the registration period for your race please get on the wait list soon as some people will be offered entry through that channel.  Please note: Our 5K race will continue to take registrations until its max number has been reached.  We are planning to take registrations on race day (Saturday, April 26th) for this race, unless of course it sells out during the Expo. Registrations for the Kid’s 1.2 Mile Marathon on Saturday are offered thru affiliated charities only. Race day registration for this event will likely be available as it has never sold out, yet.

4. Start Line Parking – one more time!

There is no free parking in and around Monmouth Park, the site of our Start Village and Start Line.  Last year some people experienced long waits to exit the parking lots after their race.  This year, in order to address those issues, we have created a pre-pay option ($5 either online or at the Expo).  Pre-paid parkers will have their own exit line and will hand a ticket to the attendant and they’ll be on their way.  Those who did not pre-pay will also have their own exit line.  BTW – we have hired a different group to take cash (only) this year and they will be making change whenever necessary.  The cash only fee will be $10 at the exits. IF everyone who didn’t choose the pre-pay option comes with a $10 bill that line will move as fast as the pre-paid line.  Save money and time by choosing the pre-pay option though as that is not likely to happen!

5. Finding Your Bib Number and Registration Information

We have posted a link on our website to find your bib number and other important registration information.  Many have already used that link successfully. So far the link has been available ONLY for anyone who registered prior to 4/1. However, starting on Monday evening, 4/21, everyone who registered prior to the close of on-line registration will be included).  Please enter your last name, click “Search” and either print out that screen of information or write down your bib number and bring it to Packet Pick-up at the Expo, along with your official government issued ID.

6. Finding Your Finish Time

Finish times will be available soon after you complete your race, in a number of ways: 1) download a free QR Code Reader/Scanner to your smartphone  and you can simply scan the QR Code on your bib, 2) you can ask a friend with a smartphone and QR Code Reader/Scanner to scan the code on your bib for you, 3) you can go to the “Awards and Results” Tent in the Finish Line Festival Area and volunteers there will scan your bib for you,  4) you can also get your finish time via a link on the main page of our website.

Here’s a QR code to test your QR reader/scanner.  qrtest1 It will take you to our currently blank race results page (no finishers yet)!

7. Reconnecting With Your Supporters

In the middle of the Finish Line Festival Area is the Reunion Area, a place to meet your family and friends after your race. To locate it either check the Finish Line Festival Area map or look for the big gorilla as you get near the main stage.

8. Getting Back To Monmouth Park

Return busing to Monmouth Park will begin around 9:15 am (or when the course is clear of athletes).  We are unable to begin sooner as the roadway between the finish area and Monmouth Park will still be closed due to the race.  Please note: Loading of the buses will be by corral order initially (A then B) in order to allow those athletes who finished earlier, and their supporters, first access to the buses.  The initial wave of athletes and spectators will be gathering in the bus corrals from about 9:00 to 10:00 am.  As that wave of riders starts to dissipate the bulk of the half marathoners will finish.  After 10 am boarding will be open for everyone and will continue until 4:30 pm.  See below for a list of things to do after your race.

9. Runner Tracking on Sunday the 27th

We will again provide a free runner tracking service during our Full and Half Marathons. A link will be posted soon to sign up for the service.  It will be on the main page of our website and posted on our Facebook page and Twitter feed as well.

10. Last Call for Volunteers!

We still have a few volunteer positions open for race week shifts (April 23-27).  If you’d like to be part of the action and involved in some of the many activities required to put on this weekend long event, we would be glad to find a spot for you. Send an email right away to: Volunteers@NJMarathon.org, as we’re almost full.

13. Helping Others

We’re attempting to change the lives of families in African villages again by donating used athletic shoes to the MORE Foundation during the Expo. It takes the proceeds from 600 pairs of shoes to sustain a family for a year, and we’d like to adopt several families again this year! Together we supported 4 families in 2013. Thank you!

Move for Hunger will be conducting a food drive again this year during the Health & Fitness Expo.  Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo.  Please help us to end hunger here in New Jersey!!

This will be my last update prior to race day. I hope that these ten weekly messages have made your planning for race day a bit less complicated, and that you know more about all the great things to do at our Expo, what to expect on the course during your race, about our new 5K and Family Festival and Kids Races on Saturday, and at our Finish Line Festival on Sunday. We all hope that you thoroughly enjoy your time with us.

Please follow us throughout the year on Facebook, Twitter and on our blog to learn about the new things which we have planned for 2015, and to join us for our free: clinics, training runs, adventure runs, and the races which we sponsor throughout the year! We look forward to being a training/running resource for you year round and hope that you will stay in touch as we are interested in you as athletes and not only as participants in our races.

This one’s for you New Jersey and runners everywhere, as we welcome our friends and neighbors from across the state, the country and from around the world!  This year we are celebrating YOU as we encourage you to, “Let Your Star Shine” during your weekend with us.  Here’s your mantra for race day, “Be Brilliant”!!  May you shine brightly on race day and throughout the year, fellow athletes!

You inspire us each day with your determination, dedication and good humor, as you work through the many issues involved in endurance sports!  Congratulations to each of you as you strive to be better than you were yesterday!

Best wishes during your training, racing and throughout the year! We look forward to you joining us again in 2015!

 1.  We’re Selling Out!

If you have friends and family who haven’t registered for our Sunday races yet, please let them know they need to register ASAP in order to ensure they get in!  It looks like all of our Sunday races will sell out sometime this week! After each of the races sell out we will create a wait list.  As people switch races, defer or drop out we’ll fill each newly open slot from the wait list, but there’s no guarantee.

Our Saturday races will also continue to take registrations until their max numbers have been reached.  We have planned to take registrations on race day (Saturday, April 26th) for these races, unless of course they also sell out.

The Kids’ 1.2 Mile Marathon is the only event which requires a paid registration (either on-line or on-site on race day morning).  Four charities are offering registrations for this race. Choose one of those charities and register with them.  All of your registration money goes directly to the charity of your choice.

 3. The Kids Move The New Jersey Marathon Program

2000 Long Branch Elementary School Children have begun a multi-week program to accumulate 25 equivalent miles of movement by Saturday, April 26th.  The children who have successfully met that goal will be invited to move (run, walk, etc.) the last 1.2 miles with us in order to complete the full marathon distance, during the Kids’ 1.2 Mile Marathon. This program is enabled by the enthusiastic support of: the Long Branch School District, Novo Nordisk (sponsoring the multi-week in-school portion), the New Jersey Road Runners Youth Foundation (sponsoring the finishers medals), and the New Jersey Marathon.  We are all proud of this amazing event, and expect to offer it state-wide over the coming years.

 4. Security – Be Aware of the Rules to Make Race Day Easier

On Sunday, April 27th special security procedures will be in place at the start, finish and throughout the courses. Here are some Highlights: Registered Athletes: May bring one clear plastic bag, the one which was given to them by the race, with no other bag inside it.  That Official Race Day Gear Bag must be dropped off at the Gear Drop Trucks inside Monmouth Park.  Hydration belts and hydration bladders are allowed (as long as they do not contain pockets).  Athletes wearing the hydration belts/packs may be asked to drink the liquid.

Spectators: No bags of ANY KIND will be allowed in the security zones inside the Monmouth Park Grandstand gates or inside the secure Finish Line Festival Area.  That means no pocketbooks, backpacks, diaper bags, etc.

On Saturday, April 26th and Friday, April 25th report any suspicious behavior and unattended bags, backpacks, etc.

 5. Getting Information During Race Weekend

If you have questions over race weekend there will be Information available in many locations and ways. There will be an Info booth just inside the Main Expo Entrance (to the left), a tent as you enter Monmouth Park at the Start Area and a tent at the Finish Line Festival area on race day. In addition, there will be staff roaming around each of those venues wearing shirts which say: “Got A Question?” on the front and “Ask Me!” on the back.  If the Ask Me folks can answer your question they will direct you to one of our Info booths/tents.
