  • Enjoy a free, light massage, to help with your post-race recovery and rejuvenation
  • Enjoy a meal while cheering for family/friends or enjoy a post-race celebration at various locations near the race course. At Rooney’s (discounted drinks – show your bib), at our Vendor Food Area just south of the Main Stage – featuring a NJ favorite, the Windmill, at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa (show your bib for a 20% discount on their fantastic buffet), and also in several places in Pier Village (merchants throughout the Village will be offering discounted food, drinks and merchandise, just show your bib).

  • Take a walk on the beach, which is right beside the finish area, and perhaps take a dip in the ocean!
  1. On the Courses – Be considerate of each other and the neighborhoods you travel through during you race.  These areas are our local streets and neighborhoods.  Please deposit all trash in the event-provided receptacles, use only bathroom and porta-john facilities along the course (not the lawns, bushes, woods, etc.), discard energy gel wrappers, orange peels, banana peels, etc., in trash receptacles, wear your bib while on the course, do not leave the race course before the finish line without notifying a race official and providing your bib number, when walking on the course please stay to the right side and race no more than two abreast so that others behind you will have room to pass. These are a few of the ways you can help make these races safer and more enjoyable for you and your fellow athletes.  Respect each other out there.  You are all athletes, doing your personal best. Enjoy the journey!
  1. Helping Others – Once again this year we are asking you to please bring your faithful training buddies (shoes) with you to the Expo to donate to the MORE Foundation.  Thank you! Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo again this year.  Please join us in helping Move for Hunger to end hunger here in New Jersey!!

This will be my last update. I hope that these ten weekly messages have made your planning for race day a bit less complicated and that you know more about all the great things to do at our Expo, what to expect on the course during your race on Saturday and/or Sunday, and at our Post-race Festival on Sunday.

Please follow us throughout the year on Facebook, Twitter and on our blog to learn about the new things which we have planned for 2016, and to join us for our free: clinics, training runs, and the races which we sponsor throughout the year!

This one’s for you New Jersey and for runners everywhere, as we welcome our friends and neighbors from across the state, the region, the country and from around the world to the Jersey Shore. Later this week we’ll “See You at the Shore”! We hope that you’ll come back again to enjoy everything it has to offer.

You inspire us each day with your determination, dedication and good humor (except during your taper weeks of course), as you work through the many issues involved in endurance sports!  Congratulations to each of you as you strive to be better than you were yesterday!

Best wishes during your race with us and during the rest of 2015.  We look forward to welcoming you to our 20th Anniversary race weekend, in late April 2016.

Please check out the various activities on our website and bring the family!

  1. The Kids Move The New Jersey Marathon Program

Over 2500 Elementary School Children from Long Branch, Oceanport, Monmouth Beach and Perth Amboy have begun a multi-week program to accumulate either 12 or 25 equivalent miles of movement (depending on their age) before Saturday, April 25th.  The children who have successfully met that goal will be invited to move (run, walk, etc.) the last 1.1 or 1.2 miles with us in order to complete the half or full marathon distance, during the Kids’ 1.2 Mile Run. This program is enabled by the enthusiastic support of: the School Districts, Novo Nordisk (sponsoring the multi-week in-school portion), the New Jersey Road Runners Youth Foundation (sponsoring the finishers medals), and the New Jersey Marathon and Half Marathon.  We are all proud of this amazing event, and expect to offer it state-wide in future years.

  1. Security – Be Aware of the Rules to Make Race Day Easier

On Sunday, April 26th special security procedures will be in place at the start, finish and throughout the courses. Here are some Highlights:

  • Registered Athletes: May bring one clear plastic bag, the one which was given to them by the race, with no other bag inside it. That Official Race Day Gear Bag must be dropped off at the Gear Drop Trucks inside Monmouth Park.  Hydration belts and hydration bladders are allowed (as long as they do not contain pockets).  Athletes wearing the hydration belts/packs may be asked to take a drink of the liquid.
  • Spectators: NO BAGS OF ANY KIND will be allowed in the security zones inside the Monmouth Park Grandstand gates or inside the secure Finish Line Festival Area. That means no pocketbooks, backpacks, diaper bags, etc.

  1. Getting Information During Race Weekend

If you have questions over race weekend there will be Information available in many locations and ways. There will be an Info booth just inside the Main Expo Entrance (to the right), a tent as you enter Monmouth Park at the Start Area and a tent at the Finish Line Festival area on race day. In addition, there will be staff roaming around each of those venues wearing shirts which say: “Got A Question?” on the front and “Ask Me!” on the back.  If the Ask Me folks can’t answer your question they will direct you to one of our Info booths/tents.

  1. Volunteers – Final Call

We have a few volunteer positions still open for race weeks shifts (April 23-26).  If you’d like to be part of the action and involved in some of the many activities required to put on this weekend event, we would be glad to find a spot for you. Send an email right away to: Volunteers@NJMarathon.org, as we’re almost full.

  1. Making Race Day Special

Choose one or more of the following ways to enhance your race experience:

  1. Let’s All Pitch in Together to Help Others

We’re attempting to change the lives of families in African villages again by donating used athletic shoes to the MORE Foundation during the Expo. It takes the proceeds from 600 pairs of shoes to sustain a family for a year, and we’d like to adopt several families again this year! Together we have supported 8 families since 2012. That’s a lot of shoes! We thank you for giving us your old training and racing partners! We encourage you to continue the tradition this year.

Move for Hunger will be conducting a food drive again this year during the Health & Fitness Expo.  Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo.  Please help us to end hunger here in New Jersey!! Together you have donated over 6,000 pounds of food.  Thank you for your generosity!

I hope that the information above will help you to understand what to expect during the many parts of race weekend and help you to better plan your time with us at the Shore.

Best wishes during your training and on race day!

 1. Race Information Booklet

We are pleased to provide a link to our “green” Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon Information Booklet.  We hope that it will be a useful recap of information about our entire weekend of activities for you and your supporters.

2. Maps

Here’s a link to maps for each of our races plus the Start & Finish Line Festival Areas all in one place.

3. The Marathon is SOLD OUT

Don’t delay in registering for our half and relay as they may sell out at any moment!    Please note: As people switch races, defer or drop out we’ll fill each newly open slot from the wait list, but there’s no guarantee. So, if you missed the registration period for your race please get on the wait list soon as some people will be offered entry through that channel.  Please note: Our 5K race will continue to take registrations until its max number has been reached.  We are planning to take registrations on race day (Saturday, April 26th) for this race, unless of course it sells out during the Expo. Registrations for the Kid’s 1.2 Mile Marathon on Saturday are offered thru affiliated charities only. Race day registration for this event will likely be available as it has never sold out, yet.

4. Start Line Parking – one more time!

There is no free parking in and around Monmouth Park, the site of our Start Village and Start Line.  Last year some people experienced long waits to exit the parking lots after their race.  This year, in order to address those issues, we have created a pre-pay option ($5 either online or at the Expo).  Pre-paid parkers will have their own exit line and will hand a ticket to the attendant and they’ll be on their way.  Those who did not pre-pay will also have their own exit line.  BTW – we have hired a different group to take cash (only) this year and they will be making change whenever necessary.  The cash only fee will be $10 at the exits. IF everyone who didn’t choose the pre-pay option comes with a $10 bill that line will move as fast as the pre-paid line.  Save money and time by choosing the pre-pay option though as that is not likely to happen!

5. Finding Your Bib Number and Registration Information

We have posted a link on our website to find your bib number and other important registration information.  Many have already used that link successfully. So far the link has been available ONLY for anyone who registered prior to 4/1. However, starting on Monday evening, 4/21, everyone who registered prior to the close of on-line registration will be included).  Please enter your last name, click “Search” and either print out that screen of information or write down your bib number and bring it to Packet Pick-up at the Expo, along with your official government issued ID.

6. Finding Your Finish Time

Finish times will be available soon after you complete your race, in a number of ways: 1) download a free QR Code Reader/Scanner to your smartphone  and you can simply scan the QR Code on your bib, 2) you can ask a friend with a smartphone and QR Code Reader/Scanner to scan the code on your bib for you, 3) you can go to the “Awards and Results” Tent in the Finish Line Festival Area and volunteers there will scan your bib for you,  4) you can also get your finish time via a link on the main page of our website.

Here’s a QR code to test your QR reader/scanner.  qrtest1 It will take you to our currently blank race results page (no finishers yet)!

7. Reconnecting With Your Supporters

In the middle of the Finish Line Festival Area is the Reunion Area, a place to meet your family and friends after your race. To locate it either check the Finish Line Festival Area map or look for the big gorilla as you get near the main stage.

8. Getting Back To Monmouth Park

Return busing to Monmouth Park will begin around 9:15 am (or when the course is clear of athletes).  We are unable to begin sooner as the roadway between the finish area and Monmouth Park will still be closed due to the race.  Please note: Loading of the buses will be by corral order initially (A then B) in order to allow those athletes who finished earlier, and their supporters, first access to the buses.  The initial wave of athletes and spectators will be gathering in the bus corrals from about 9:00 to 10:00 am.  As that wave of riders starts to dissipate the bulk of the half marathoners will finish.  After 10 am boarding will be open for everyone and will continue until 4:30 pm.  See below for a list of things to do after your race.

9. Runner Tracking on Sunday the 27th

We will again provide a free runner tracking service during our Full and Half Marathons. A link will be posted soon to sign up for the service.  It will be on the main page of our website and posted on our Facebook page and Twitter feed as well.

13. Helping Others

We’re attempting to change the lives of families in African villages again by donating used athletic shoes to the MORE Foundation during the Expo. It takes the proceeds from 600 pairs of shoes to sustain a family for a year, and we’d like to adopt several families again this year! Together we supported 4 families in 2013. Thank you!

Move for Hunger will be conducting a food drive again this year during the Health & Fitness Expo.  Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo.  Please help us to end hunger here in New Jersey!!

This will be my last update prior to race day. I hope that these ten weekly messages have made your planning for race day a bit less complicated, and that you know more about all the great things to do at our Expo, what to expect on the course during your race, about our new 5K and Family Festival and Kids Races on Saturday, and at our Finish Line Festival on Sunday. We all hope that you thoroughly enjoy your time with us.

Please follow us throughout the year on Facebook, Twitter and on our blog to learn about the new things which we have planned for 2015, and to join us for our free: clinics, training runs, adventure runs, and the races which we sponsor throughout the year! We look forward to being a training/running resource for you year round and hope that you will stay in touch as we are interested in you as athletes and not only as participants in our races.

This one’s for you New Jersey and runners everywhere, as we welcome our friends and neighbors from across the state, the country and from around the world!  This year we are celebrating YOU as we encourage you to, “Let Your Star Shine” during your weekend with us.  Here’s your mantra for race day, “Be Brilliant”!!  May you shine brightly on race day and throughout the year, fellow athletes!

You inspire us each day with your determination, dedication and good humor, as you work through the many issues involved in endurance sports!  Congratulations to each of you as you strive to be better than you were yesterday!

Best wishes during your training, racing and throughout the year! We look forward to you joining us again in 2015!

 1.  We’re Selling Out!

If you have friends and family who haven’t registered for our Sunday races yet, please let them know they need to register ASAP in order to ensure they get in!  It looks like all of our Sunday races will sell out sometime this week! After each of the races sell out we will create a wait list.  As people switch races, defer or drop out we’ll fill each newly open slot from the wait list, but there’s no guarantee.

Our Saturday races will also continue to take registrations until their max numbers have been reached.  We have planned to take registrations on race day (Saturday, April 26th) for these races, unless of course they also sell out.

 2. The Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races

Held each year on the Saturday morning prior to our Marathon, etc. on the Oceanfront Promenade in Long Branch (the site of the finish area for the Sunday races), Barnabas Health brings families a morning of fun activities and kids races. Please check out the various activities on our website and bring the family!

The Kids’ 1.2 Mile Marathon is the only event which requires a paid registration (either on-line or on-site on race day morning).  Four charities are offering registrations for this race. Choose one of those charities and register with them.  All of your registration money goes directly to the charity of your choice.

 3. The Kids Move The New Jersey Marathon Program

2000 Long Branch Elementary School Children have begun a multi-week program to accumulate 25 equivalent miles of movement by Saturday, April 26th.  The children who have successfully met that goal will be invited to move (run, walk, etc.) the last 1.2 miles with us in order to complete the full marathon distance, during the Kids’ 1.2 Mile Marathon. This program is enabled by the enthusiastic support of: the Long Branch School District, Novo Nordisk (sponsoring the multi-week in-school portion), the New Jersey Road Runners Youth Foundation (sponsoring the finishers medals), and the New Jersey Marathon.  We are all proud of this amazing event, and expect to offer it state-wide over the coming years.

 4. Security – Be Aware of the Rules to Make Race Day Easier

On Sunday, April 27th special security procedures will be in place at the start, finish and throughout the courses. Here are some Highlights: Registered Athletes: May bring one clear plastic bag, the one which was given to them by the race, with no other bag inside it.  That Official Race Day Gear Bag must be dropped off at the Gear Drop Trucks inside Monmouth Park.  Hydration belts and hydration bladders are allowed (as long as they do not contain pockets).  Athletes wearing the hydration belts/packs may be asked to drink the liquid.

Spectators: No bags of ANY KIND will be allowed in the security zones inside the Monmouth Park Grandstand gates or inside the secure Finish Line Festival Area.  That means no pocketbooks, backpacks, diaper bags, etc.

On Saturday, April 26th and Friday, April 25th report any suspicious behavior and unattended bags, backpacks, etc.

 5. Getting Information During Race Weekend

If you have questions over race weekend there will be Information available in many locations and ways. There will be an Info booth just inside the Main Expo Entrance (to the left), a tent as you enter Monmouth Park at the Start Area and a tent at the Finish Line Festival area on race day. In addition, there will be staff roaming around each of those venues wearing shirts which say: “Got A Question?” on the front and “Ask Me!” on the back.  If the Ask Me folks can answer your question they will direct you to one of our Info booths/tents.

 6. Volunteer Shout Out

We have a few volunteer positions open for race weeks shifts (April 23-27).  If you’d like to be part of the action and involved in some of the many activities required to put on this weekend event, we would be glad to find a spot for you. Send an email right away to: Volunteers@NJMarathon.org, as we’re almost full.

 7. NY/NJ Challenge Participants

Don’t forget to pick up your medal at our Results and Awards tent after your race.  You earned it, and we want you to have it! Three medals for two races, sweet!

2013 Race Director Update #8 – April 14 (3 weeks until The New Jersey Marathon Weekend)

Where does the Race Start? Monmouth Park, in Oceanport, NJ

Bib # and corral assignments: Prior to the opening of the Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo, we will be sending every registered participant an important document; the “2013 New Jersey Marathon, Long Branch Half Marathon & Half Marathon Relay Confirmation Form”, via the email address entered during registration

That document will contain vital registration information, including your bib #, starting corral assignment, and the event waiver.  The first emails are scheduled to be sent on April 16th to everyone registered prior to April 11th.  The final batch of emails will be sent a few days after the close of on-line registration to everyone registered after April 10th.

Bringing the verified and signed Confirmation Form with you to the Expo will speed up the race packet pick-up process.  Please note: Blank forms will be available at the Expo, along with computers to look up your bib #, etc. if needed.

Race Packet Pick-up Info: Please review the web page Packet Pick-up Information prior to arriving at the Expo, to ensure that you have everything that you need. This will make your experience during Race Packet Pick-up as easy as possible.  If you are unable to pick up your race packet during the Expo hours, you may send a proxy to pick it up for you. If you cannot find someone to be your proxy, you can hire someone to act as your proxy. Please see the “Special Proxy Packet Pick-up Service” information below for that information.

Special Proxy Packet Pick-Up Service: For those participants not arriving until Sunday morning.

We will assemble a group of people who will pick up your race packet at the Expo and have it ready for you on Sunday morning – at a location near the start area. The details are below:

Important –

  • Advanced reservations are required.
  • The registration application for the proxy packet pick-up service can be found here
  • You must sign up for this reservation-only service which will close prior to the opening of the Expo on May 3rd.

Race Day Weather: The weather varies from year to year on race day. When planning for your race, please remember to have a plan for: cold, rain, wind, sun, heat, humidity, etc. You should understand how to deal with each of these conditions during your race, and adjust your race strategy (goal) accordingly. For example, it can be dangerous to try to PR if we change the warning signs to anything other than green (please refer to Race Director Update # 2 for a description of the warning system). An archive of all previous RD Updates is available from the home page of our website. Here’s a direct link to the archive.

Parking at the Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo: Parking during the Expo, on May 4th and 5th, will be inside the Grandstand gates in Monmouth Park.  Watch for signs as you drive along Oceanport Ave. Important – Prior to heading to the Health & Fitness Expo to pick up your race packet (or sending your Proxy), Please Review” Packet Pick-Up Instructions, and don’t forget to also check out the free speakers, classes, etc.

Parking on Race Day: Parking on race day will occur in many lots inside the park gates and also in lots surrounding the park. The lots will open at 4:30 am on May 5th. Signboards and police officers will direct you to the best available entrance.  Please pay attention to the signs and directions in order to speed up the process.  Our parking staff will be in the lots directing you exactly where to park. Please park as instructed, so that we can park everyone as quickly as possible.  Please note: If you wish to be dropped off prior to the start, please watch for the drop-off area signs and follow police instructions. Important cars in the drop-off area may NOT park. DO NOT DROP ANYONE OFF OUTSIDE THE DROP OFF AREA, AS THAT WILL SLOW DOWN PARKING FOR OTHERS.

Traffic on Race Day: Traffic on race day morning has been very heavy each of the past several years.  This is especially the case about an hour prior to race start time, as a majority of people seem to arrive at about that same time. In order to take traffic stress out of race day morning, plan on carpooling, arriving early or take the Special New Jersey Marathon Race Day Train, and enjoy a more relaxing race day experience!  Monmouth Park has places to top off your fuel (bananas, bagels, peanut butter, etc.) and hydration (water, coffee, tea, etc.), warm up, stretch, get out of the crowds and the weather, and/or unhydrate, etc. The thoroughbreds will likely be training early in the morning. Watching them can be a great way to relax prior to your race, which certainly beats sitting in traffic!

Everyone driving east on Rt. 36 toward Monmouth Park on race day morning will be directed to turn left onto either County Road 537, Oceanport Ave. or Victor Ave. Please pay attention to the police directions as they implement the plan.

Important – All participants must complete the Emergency Information on the back for their bibs in ball-point pen.

We Want to Hear Why You Run: Email us your stories! If selected you may be featured on our Facebook page, in newsletters, or promotional materials. We’ve received a number of good ones, and we know that there are more of you out there. Inspire us and others, please!

Helping Us Help Others: Move for Hunger will be conducting a food drive during the Novo Nordisk Health & Fitness Expo. Please remember, it’s “cans in hands” when heading to the Expo.  (Collection bins will also be available at the finish on race day.) Please help us to end hunger right here in The Garden State!!!

We are also attempting to change the lives of families in African villages by donating used athletic shoes to the MORE Foundation during the Expo. It takes the proceeds from 600 pairs to sustain a family for a year, and we’d like to adopt several families this year! Thank you for joining with us in this very worth-while effort!  Together in 2012, we provided the Agozi Moses Family with the MORE Foundation benefits. Thank you!

Today! Thank you to everyone who joined us today for their training run.  We enjoyed hosting you three weeks before race day, and were pleased to hear of, and read about, the positive experiences you had on the race courses today.  I’m sure that we all hope that was a preview of race day weather this morning!

Best wishes during your training and on race day,

Joe Gigas, Executive Race Director
